Is the common cuckoo going the way of the Dodo? 51 species of Britains birds including the Cuckoo are facing extinction The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds announced this week.

Cuckoo

“The cuckoo and other birds that visit Britain in the summer have suffered population loss largely due to a decrease in food and water supply in sub-Saharan Africa, where many migrate from. The problem is difficulty in finding food. The Sahara desert is spreading and the birds are having a hard time flying out in good condition,” said Tim Webb of the RSPB, “There isn’t just one single problem, there are a host.”

“Everyone thinks these birds are always there, but they are struggling, if nothing changes we will see them disappear, the cuckoo population in Britain has declined 37 percent since 1994.

Borneo Lowland Rain Forests are the richest rain forests in the world and rival the diversity of New Guinea and the Amazon. These forests are home to the world’s endangered orangutan.

Unfortunately, these forests have been rapidly converted to oil palm plantations or commercially logged at unprecedented rates over the past ten years. In 1997-1998 fires intentionally set to clear the forest for commercial agriculture such as oil palm ravaged Kalimantan. If the current trend of habitat destruction continues, there will be no remaining lowland forests in Borneo an Eco disaster for all forest insects, amphipians, and animals.

Borneo’s lowland forests are home to the globally recognized primate orangutan. The prehistoric race of orangutan distribution reached mainland Asia through Indochina and Thailand to southeastern China. Today the orangutan is limited to northern Sumatra and Borneo . Unlike other apes, orangutans are solitary and arboreal. They feed primarily on fruit but also feed on leaves, flowers, insects, and, during times of food stress, specifically bark . The orangutans move throughout the forest, following the fruiting of numerous trees. They have the ability to catalog the location and degree of a fruit’s ripeness for a large number of trees and species .

Save Primates

The orangutan is not the only primate in Borneo’s lowland forests. They are home to thirteen primate species: three apes (the orangutan and two gibbon species), five langurs, two macaques, the tarsier (Tarsius bancanus), the slow loris (Nycticebus coucang), and the endangered proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus). Most of these species have overlapping ranges, but they vary with respect to dietary content and foraging strategy .

Victoria Griffin…was born in March of 1972 to a Finnish mother and an American father. She was raised among the mountains of the southeastern United States and spent many childhood summers and holidays with her mother’s family in Finland.

Mainly a self-taught artist, Victoria embarked upon her creative explorations at a very early age (occasionally to be spotted scribbling on walls hidden behind doors). Tales of fantasy and folklore fueled her life-long facination with the paranormal and metaphysical realm. The creatures of Faerie soon became her Muses. The main focus of her art has been to offer others a glimpse beyond the Veil and into their world. She works primarily with ink and watercolors to create her images. Her artwork appeared on the covers of “Aquarius: A Sign of The Times” and “The Circle of Stones Journal”, as well as in the books 500 Fairy Motifs, Visions of Atlantis and Art of the Business of Fantasy Art.

Aside from her art, Victoria is also a photographer, published poet and former radio disc-jockey. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, reading, beachcombing, music, collecting tarot decks and jesters, star gazing and blogging. She currently lives in Oconee County

Angel Falls (indigenous name: Parakupa-vena or Kerepakupai merú which means the fall from the highest point, in Pemon language; Spanish: Salto Ángel) is the world’s highest waterfall, with a height of 979m (3,212ft) and a clear drop of 807m (2,647ft). It is located in the Canaima National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Canaima) , in the Gran Sabana region of Bolivar State, Venezuela.

The height of the falls is so great that before getting anywhere near the ground, the water is atomized by the strong winds and turned into mist. The mist can be felt a mile away. The base of the falls feeds into the Kerep River (alternately known as the Rio Gauya) which flows into the Churun River, a tributary of the Carrao River. Named after Jimmy Angel who discovered it when he flew past in 1933 and crash landed in 1937 on the top.
